De nacht van woensdag 13 augustus vieren ze in Elche Nit de l'Alba, dit is een van de feesten waar de inwoners van Elche gretig naar uit kijken. Honderden vuurwerkpijlen lichten de hemel op in een spervuur van kleur en geluid. Dit feest, waarvan de oorsprong teruggaat tot de Middeleeuwen, is ontstaan toen families een vuurwerkpijl afschoten voor elk van hun kinderen ter ere van de Maagd Maria. Vandaag is deze traditie een gecoördineerd en georganiseerd vuurwerkspektakel waar honderden vuurwerkpijlen worden afgevuurd vanuit verschillende punten van de stad. Naast dit georganiseerd vuurwerkspektakel vuren ook de stedelingen spontaan hun eigen vuurwerk af.
De kleurrijke storm van raketten en vuurwerk begint om
23:00 uur en gaat onverminderd door tot een paar minuten voor middernacht. Plotseling
staakt alle vuurwerk in de stad en de lichten worden uitgeschakeld. De mensen
van Elche zwijgen terwijl ze luisteren naar "El
Gloria", het belangrijkste fragment uit het lyrisch
drama “Misteri d'Elx”
. Voor een paar seconden wordt de duisternis over de stad schitterend verlicht
door een enorme witte steruitbarsting, “la Palmera de la Virgen”,
die vrijkomt uit de Basilica de Santa María.
Zodra het magische moment voorbij is, worden de stadslichten
terug aangestoken en op de toren van de Basiliek verschijnt
“Virgen de fuego” waarna alle
inwoners van de stad vanaf hun balkons en daken het beroemde Habanera
"Aroma's Elche" uit volle borst meezingen.
De traditioneel einde van het feest is het eten van
watermeloen. Sommige mensen verlengen het feest door tot in de kleine uurtjes
raketten en vuurpijlen af te
vuren. De durvers nemen
deel aan de traditionele "guerra de carretillas",
dit gebeuren vindt plaats in de speciaal aangewezen gebieden in het centrum
van de stad, een evenement aanbevolen voor alleen de meest geharde vuurwerk
liefhebbers.

The
rockets and the fireworks take place at about 23:00 onwards and cease
barely minutes before the clock striking midnight. At that moment, the
fireworks cease and the lights of the city are turned off and the people
of Elche wait in silence for the culminating moment of the night, while
in the background we can hear the most significant fragment of the Misteri d'Elx:
“the Gloria Patri”. Amidst the utter darkness of the night, we see the
palm of the Virgin, a huge palm represented by white light which is
launched from the Basilica of Santa María, and which for some seconds, lights up the skies, above the city of Elche magnificently.
After
this magic moment, the light come back on and in the tower of the
Basilica, a small “virgin of fire” appears as we listen to the famous
habanera “Aromas ilicitanos”
and all of the local folk join in and sing it from their terraces and
balconies. To conclude, there is a tradition of celebrating the end by
eating watermelon. Some locals will continue to set off fireworks well
into the night. Other locals, the most daring, will participate in the
traditional “guerra de carretillas”, a mock fight with firecrackers in a
place in the town centre specially fenced for it, only for those who
are passionate about fire.
